After the events in the first book of the trilogy, 'The Magician's Guild', Sonea has become a student in the Guild. Her life is made very difficult, however, because many of her fellow students, who all come from the upper class, resent a poor girl from the slums studying magic, especially since she has a lot of talent and the help and guidance of one of the older magicians, Rothen. The situation gets a lot worse when Akkarin, an extremely powerful magician and High Lord of the Guild, finds out that she saw him performing illegal magic. To enforce her silence, he takes over her guardianship from Rothen and threatens the people she cares about if she doesn't keep her knowledge to herself. While Sonea confronts her problems at the Guild, Rothen's former pupil Dannyl is on an assignment as ambassador at the Elyne court. He also has a secret task: To follow in the footsteps of the High Lord and find out what ancient magic he studied in other countries 10 years before. What he finds points to Akkarin using black magic... This book shouldn't be read on its own but in connection with the other two novels in the trilogy. (The Magician's Guild and The High Lord) Personally, I didn't like it as much as the others, simply because I felt that Sonea's story was very suspenseful and as soon as I really was into her situation the novel switched back to Dannyl. Despite that, it was a good book and I would recommend it as a good fantasy novel.
