Sleeping Giants

Themis Files Book 1

Themis Files

**A must-read thriller for lovers of The Passage, World War Z, The Martian or Interstellar**

What happens when you make a discovery that changes everything?

Deadwood, USA. A girl sneaks out just before dark to ride her new bike. Suddenly, the ground disappears beneath her. Waking up at the bottom of a deep pit, she sees an emergency rescue team above her. The people looking down see something far stranger...

"We always look forward. We never look back."

That girl grows up to be Dr. Rose Franklyn, a brilliant scientist and the leading world expert on what she discovered. An enormous, ornate hand made of an exceptionally rare metal, which predates all human civilisation on the continent.

"But this thing ... it's different. It challenges us. It rewrites history."

An object whose origins and purpose are perhaps the greatest mystery humanity has ever faced. Solving the secret of where it came from - and how many more parts may be out there - could change life as we know it.

"It dares us to question what we know about ourselves."

But what if we were meant to find it? And what happens when this vast, global puzzle is complete...?

"About everything."

'Bursts at the seams with big ideas. A sheer blast from start to finish. I haven't had this much fun reading in ages' Blake Crouch, author of the Wayward Pines trilogy

'A stellar debut which masterfully blends sci-fi, political thriller and apocalyptic fiction. So much more than the sum of its parts - a page-turner of the highest order' Kirkus Reviews

'Reminiscent of The Martian and World War Z, this is a luminous conspiracy yarn that shoots for (and lands among) the stars' Pierce Brown, author of Red Rising

Rezension
The overall story unfolds easily... and quickly draws the reader... but it is a very different experience than a standard third- or first-person narrative

Fazit: Sooooooo spannend und genial! *_*

«Mr. Couture is not an American citizen. He is from Montreal. It is a large city, about the size of Boston, in that very large country just north of here. You may have heard of it. They play hockey. —» Erstens LIEBE ich diese Art der Erzählform! Keine unnötigen Beschreibungen, einfach nur direkte Rede. Ich liebe Dialoge. Zweitens: Die Geschichte war sooo spannend! Wow! «People who owe me favors are called friends.» «“Perhaps, deep down inside that rugged shell of yours, there is a little girl desperately waiting for her Prince Charming to propose." "Of course there is. Only until now, I'd been pretty successful at keeping that little brat's mouth shut.”» Für Fans von Illuminae, Red Rising und Pacific Rim/Neon Genesis Evangelion Fazit: Sooooooo spannend und genial! *_*

Dr. Rose Franklin, years after the haunting discovery of an inexplicable, giant hand in her childhood, seeks to solve the riddle attached to it. As the lead scientist appointed to a dedicated team tasked to investigate the metal artefact, she soon discovers that there have to be many more parts. But what purpose does it serve? Who are the ingenious creators? More than 5000 years old, human involvement seems impossible… With the first part of the Themis-Files trilogy Sylvain Neuvel creates a fascinating, complex and entertaining novel. Written in a unique style, by telling the story through interviews, communications and news reports, Sci-Fi fans with a soft spot for somewhat realistic storytelling will have an excellent time following the team’s discovery that we’re not alone on this planet.

I really don’t know why I waited so long to read this book. It became one of my favourites. It is really a fun and easy read (most of the time the text is either an interview or a journal entry). And it was much deeper than I first anticipated. I mean don’t get me wrong, but the story is basically about a group of people who... I really don’t know why I waited so long to read this book. It became one of my favourites. It is really a fun and easy read (most of the time the text is either an interview or a journal entry). And it was much deeper than I first anticipated. I mean don’t get me wrong, but the story is basically about a group of people who are collecting parts of a mega-robot left on earth by aliens 5000 years ago. But the politics described here and the personal motivation of the people involved (and also the bond that they’re sharing) really made me love this book. I just couldn’t put it down and when it was over I just wanted to keep on reading (thank god it is the first part of a, now finished, trilogy).
